Course Description

This course offers an exploration of visual development, including key milestones from infancy and early signs that may indicate visual difficulties. Participants will learn what a comprehensive visual assessment should include and how visual function influences motor coordination, behavior, and learning. The course will delve into the relationship between vision, primitive reflexes, and dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder), highlighting how delays or disruptions in these areas can affect a child’s overall development. Additionally, the course will examine vision-related challenges commonly observed in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), providing insight into how these visual factors impact functional participation in everyday activities.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

List typical visual developmental milestones for infants to 7 years old children and identify how vision checklists can assist in the early identification of visual concerns affecting occupational engagement.
Describe the foundational role of visual processing in child development and recognize how visual skills impact behavior, motor coordination, and participation in daily tasks.
Identify five common primitive reflexes – Moro, Tonic Labyrinthine, Symmetrical Tonic Neck, Asymmetrical Tonic Neck, and Spinal Galant.
Recognize visual indicators commonly associated with dyspraxia (developmental coordination disorder) and basic classroom accommodations that support students with Dyspraxia.
Identify signs and symptoms of visual concerns with Autism students.

Monica G. Garnett does a fantastic job connecting vision, behavior, and motor skills. I appreciated how she linked theoretical concepts to daily occupational and educational challenges. The visuals and case studies were especially helpful for deeper understanding.

This course was incredibly eye-opening. Monica explained complex visual development concepts in a way that was easy to understand and immediately relevant to my work as an occupational therapist. I now have a much clearer understanding of how vision impacts coordination and behavior.
