Course Description

This introductory course provides occupational therapists with a practical and evidence-informed foundation for evaluating and supporting infants from birth to 12 months. Participants will learn core assessment skills, gain confidence in observing early developmental patterns, and apply intervention strategies that promote functional participation in daily routines.

The course introduces muscle tone assessment, primitive reflexes, postural reactions, and early motor development, along with visual-motor skills, sensory processing, early cognition, feeding and oral-motor skills, and emerging self-care abilities. Emphasis is placed on understanding typical versus atypical development, using skilled clinical observation, and incorporating family-centered and naturalistic intervention approaches. Therapists will learn how to translate assessment findings into functional and measurable treatment goals suited for infants and their caregivers.

Designed for pediatric occupational therapists working in NICU, early intervention, outpatient, and acute care settings, this course supports clinicians seeking to build a strong foundation in infant assessment and intervention.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

Participants will be able to identify hypotonia, hypertonia, and typical tone during case examples and describe how arm/leg recoil, traction response, scarf sign, and suspension tests are used in tone observation.
Participants will be able to describe key primitive reflexes and postural reactions from 0–12 months and explain their relevance to early motor development using course case scenarios.
Participants will be able to observe infant developmental patterns in pictures and describe basic gross motor, fine motor, visual-motor, sensory, cognitive, communication, and oral-motor skills.
Participants will be able to apply introductory, family-centered, and naturalistic intervention strategies to sample case studies by selecting age-appropriate therapeutic activities.

Hallie Archer

OTR/L
Hallie Archer is a pediatric occupational therapist with over 18 years of specialized experience in infant and child development across a wide range of clinical settings. Throughout her career, she has served in two major children’s hospitals, including nine years in pediatric oncology, and has gained extensive experience in the NICU, PICU, acute care, outpatient, and early intervention environments.
She is the founder of Infant OT Essentials, where she developed a comprehensive mentorship program designed to help pediatric OTs build confidence and clinical expertise in the specialized area of infant development (0–12 months). Hallie is also the founder and CEO of All Places Rehab, a directory platform that connects families with high-quality OT, PT, and SLP services. After witnessing firsthand how overwhelming it can be for caregivers to navigate the rehabilitative care system, she created this platform to offer clarity, support, and easier access to needed services—allowing families to focus on healing rather than searching for providers.
Hallie holds advanced certifications including NTMTC (Neonatal Touch and Massage Therapy Certification), CEIM (Certified Educator of Infant Massage), and RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher). Her holistic, evidence-based approach, combined with her nine years supporting medically complex children in oncology and her extensive NICU and acute care experience, gives her a unique depth of insight. She is deeply committed to supporting both infants and their families, and she is an exceptional mentor for therapists looking to grow and excel in this rewarding specialty.

This course provided a comprehensive overview of infant development while staying very practical. I now feel more confident selecting age-appropriate therapeutic activities that support early motor skills.

Tone, reflexes, and postural reactions can be confusing topics, but this course broke everything down in a clear and logical way. The explanations of tummy time, rolling, and head control development were especially strong.

Not only did I learn how to assess tone and reflexes, but I also learned how to plan family-centered and naturalistic interventions. The sample case studies made the content feel very relevant to daily clinical practice.

The photos and case examples helped me learn how to observe developmental patterns across gross motor, fine motor, visual-motor, sensory, communication, and oral-motor domains. This course really sharpened my observation skills.

This course clearly explained how to identify hypotonia, hypertonia, and typical tone using real-life case examples. The demonstrations of recoil, traction response, scarf sign, and suspension tests were especially helpful. I feel much more confident observing tone in infants now.
