Course Description

Pain is a pervasive human experience, and grief often co-occurs. This webinar for occupational therapy practitioners and medical practitioners of all levels aims to address how grief manifests in chronic pain and illness, and how an occupation-based approach can be integral in the management of pain and grief.
We will begin with an overview of how grief can manifest in people with chronic pain and/or chronic illness (CP/CI). The first activity we will discuss will be the creation of a collage with two sections: before and after. Next, we will learn a few basic principles/techniques of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Tug of War, Choice Point, and Values. Participants will learn about how they can use these techniques alone or in combination to address grief in people living with CP/CI.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

Understand how grief manifests in the context of chronic pain and chronic illness.
Understand how basic ACT principles may help people with chronic pain and illness process grief.
Have at least one concrete activity to choose from when working with patients at the intersection of grief and chronic pain and illness.

Meet The Speaker

Katy Owens

MOT, OTR/L
Katy Owens works as an acute care occupational therapist in Northern Colorado and owns an occupational therapy private practice that specializes in pain management. Prior to her current career as an occupational therapist, Katy served in the United States Coast Guard. An injury and her subsequent rehabilitation ignited her interest in OT and launched her passion to advocate for a biopsychosocial approach to pain management that is combined with an occupation-based approach.

  • Upon graduation from her Master's program, Katy was awarded "Outstanding Grad" for the College of Health and Human Services. She has presented at the Colorado State Association Annual Conference in 2023 and 2024. She was also selected from a wide pool of applicants to speak at the UCHealth 2024 Symposium, and recently presented a similar webinar for the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapy.
