Course Description

This training invites educators and therapists to recognize and support total communication by tuning in to multimodal forms of expression, including gestures, body language, AAC use, vocalizations, images, and behavior. Using a neuro-affirming, relationship-centered lens, participants will learn how to model and integrate multiple communication modalities in real time, support AAC users through model-aided language input, and respond thoughtfully when communication development follows a non-linear trajectory.
Through a combination of lecture, and case-based learning, the course emphasizes evidence-based strategies for evaluating feeding skills and developing individualized, client-centered intervention plans. Learners will participate in structured application exercises to enhance their ability to translate assessment findings into functional interventions. By the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to identify key factors influencing pediatric feeding, assess feeding and eating skills within an occupational therapy context, and apply evidence-based strategies in their clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

Identify common reasons children are referred for feeding therapy.
Describe basic sensory and motor factors that affect pediatric feeding.
Demonstrate simple evaluation strategies to assess feeding and eating skills.
Outline evidence-based intervention approaches to support children with feeding difficulties.
