Course Description

This presentation will address common communication challenges observed in autistic children and teens of various ages and abilities. The main focus will be on effective strategies for achieving diverse goals using evidence-based practices, with special emphasis on modeling, visual supports, and reinforcement.

A 15-year-old girl who is non-speaking and does not use ASL or picture/symbol exchange

A 3-year-old boy with significant Echolalia

An 8-year-old student who is fully mainstreamed but has limited peer interactions

A 15-year-old college-bound teen who is often perceived as rude

Each of the highlighted evidence-based practices will be demonstrated through recommended intervention procedures. The presentation will also include brief descriptions of additional supportive techniques and guiding philosophies.

Elizabeth Ives Field, CCC-SLP, also known as Betsey, has provided communication therapy and consultation to autism teams for over 45 years and has presented at national and regional conferences on topics of autism and communication. Elizabeth lives in Hudson, MA, presents webinars, and provides on-line consultation about autism and communication to parents, therapists, and teachers.

She has considerable experience with echolalia and autism in both sighted and blind or visually impaired children.

She has written three books on autism, including a book of strategies to address communication and social behavior across the spectrum, a practical guide that focuses specifically on intervention for echolalia, and a memoir of a long collaboration with one unusual student. EIF Book link.
